Journey beginning and ending at Longyearbyen, Svalbard

Available: 2019-07-01 to 2019-09-30 starting from $3810 AUD

Overview

Basecamp Nordenskiöld is the northernmost cabin for commercial trips on Svalbard. The cabin is located far away from any civilization and offers excellent possibilities for longer expeditions. It is situated in Billefjorden, right beside the mighty glacier Nordenskiöld. During summer you can reach the cabin by boat from Longyearbyen and during winter you can drive there with dog sledges or snowmobiles. No matter which season you pick it is certain to be an adventurous trip!

With no running water or electricity Basecamp Nordenskiöld is a true hunting cabin like those used by the trappers, but with modern comforts. We use wood for heating and get our drinking water from the melting glacier. There are 5 big bedrooms with fantastic arctic views, 11 comfortable beds, indoor toilet and a traditional sauna. The cabin is modern and comfortable with big windows giving away to the mighty glacier. Lying in the glacier moraine, the cabin is well hidden from any by passer-by.

This is a place where you are guaranteed privacy. You can enjoy your breakfast while looking right over to the magnificent Nordenskiöld glacier or relax in the sunny terrace with warm coffee while you watch polar bears hunt for seals on the sea ice.

If you are looking for a true arctic story with big glaciers, mighty mountains and rough moraine, this is the place to come!

Day 1 – Arrive Longyearbyen – explore this ‘wild west town’

Arrive Longyearbyen on Sunday. Overnight Trapper’s Hotel. Enjoy the small township of Longyearbyen with its polar museum and church.

Meet the guide in the reception at your hotel at 4 pm to go through program and equipment.

Day 2 – Transfer to Basecamp Nordenskiöld by rib boat

With no running water or electricity Nordenskiöld is a true hunting cabin like those used by the trappers, but with modern comforts.

The day starts early at 08:00, when we will meet our guide at the Trappers Hotel. We will shortly go through the week’s plan and route. We will dress up in survival suits before heading to the harbour to our open boat. We will travel all the way to the Billefjorden and Adolfbukta. There is plenty of wildlife around the fjords at this time of the year, so we have a good chance of seeing some arctic birds, walruses, belugas or even the polar bear. Once at Nordenskiöld cabin we will enjoy an outdoor lunch and get familiar with the cabin and the surroundings. After lunch it is time to head out to embrace arctic nature and explore the beauty around us. Before the evening we will return to the cabin, prepare a delicious dinner and warm up in a sauna.

Day 3 – Activity days at Basecamp Nordenskiöld

Activity days at Basecamp Nordenskiöld with options for treks, kayaking, glacier walks & much more.

We start the day with good breakfast and if the weather is good we can spend the morning learning how to paddle a kayak. We have steady and reliable double kayaks at Basecamp Nordenskiöld so we all can paddle in pairs. Kayaking is a perfect way to get around in the arctic and the very traditional way to explore the arctic shorelines. After the learning period we will set out for a daytrip to Brucebyen. We will paddle across the magnificent glacier front with icebergs and arctic wildlife. On the other side of the fjord lies Brucebyen. The small settlement consists of huts that were built 100 years ago by a Scottish geologist. The guide will tell you the fascinating story. After a long day in the cold arctic sea, it is wonderful to relax in the sauna and afterwards enjoy a delicious dinner.

Day 4 – Glacier walking on the majestic Nordenskiöld Glacier

Today we will head out to the majestic Nordenskiöld Glacier. After breakfast we go through the basic guidelines for glacier walking and climbing and the safety issues. Then we will explore the glacier that lies just 300 meters away from the cabin. We spend the day on the glacier walking up and down in the glacier cracks and enjoying the shining glacier around us. We will eat an expedition lunch on the way. In the evening we make a bonfire and enjoy the view over the fjord. Accommodation in double rooms.

Day 5 – Explore the beautiful arctic land, glacier moraines and small flowers surviving in the rash environment

Today you can put on your hiking boot and head out of the door to the close by mountains peaks. We will explore the beautiful arctic land, glacier moraines and small flowers surviving in the harsh environment. We will reach one of the close by mountain peaks and enjoy expedition lunch on the way. We will return to the cabin to warm up the sauna and prepare our dinner. Accommodation in double rooms.

Day 6 – Hiking to the mountains and then return to Longyearbyen

After breakfast we have a chance for our last hike. We can have one last photo walk to the glacier front or hike to the moraine to take the last pictures of the wildlife and the shiny glacier. We will enjoy lunch at the cabin before returning to the civilization. We make a stop in Pyramiden on the way back to Longyearbyen and get to see the Russian settlement up close. The settlement was closesd down in 1998, but has opened again for visitors. It is a fascinating place to visit. We return to Longyearbyen by boat and arrive during the afternoon or early evening.
