Scandinavian Lapland offers a great range of comfortable Nordic style accommodation and activities with an added bonus of the Northern Lights. During the day you get to know huskies and reindeers, and at night, our guides will take you out on snowshoes and snowmobiles to ‘hunt’ for the Aurora. This short tour is ideal for ’beginners’ and families with kids.
Experience the vastness of Finnish Lapland, the incredible wild scenery of coastal Norway and the original ICEHOTEL located in the little village of Jukkasjärvi.
See several other Northern Lights tours here.
Day 1 – Welcome to Lapland
Arrival to Kittilä airport and transfer to Harriniva Hotel. Harriniva Hotel is located 230kms north of the Arctic Circle in the Finnish part of Lapland and offers a great range of winter activities. A comfortable Scandinavian style accommodation is combined with a wellness centre with a wide range of therapies and treatments.
In the afternoon (at 4pm), join us in our traditional kota to cook pancakes over the open fire and for an informative workshop covering the fascinating phenomenon of the northern lights, and the science behind it.
Accommodation can be either in cosy double rooms. Dinner in the restaurant.
Day 2 – Meet your dogsledding team of eager huskies and head into the snowy wilderness
Today it is time to meet your dogsledding team of eager huskies and head into the snowy wilderness. You will visit the Harriniva Arctic Sleddog Centre with nearly 400 huskies and hear of the life of these arctic dogs. The husky guide will teach you how to handle the sled and you will meet your team of 4-5 dogs that accompany you for your safari. 2 persons share a sled and there will be an opportunity to change drivers during the safari.
Dinner at the hotel’s restaurant, and afterwards – if the skies are clear – head out and look for those Northern Lights!
Day 3 – Reindeers & Sami Culture
Breakfast and transfer to reindeer farm (20 minutes). Today you will visit a 100 years old, traditional reindeer farm of Torassieppi. You will get information about reindeer and reindeer husbandry, as well as the old way of living in Lapland in a museum and old Lappish farm house. You learn how to throw the Lappish lasso, and finally test your reindeer driving skills on a reindeer safari through the forest (1-2 persons per sled). Lunch will be served around an open fire during the safari.
Return to Harriniva in the afternoon, where a warm sauna is waiting.
Day 4 – Minibus to Tromsø – the middle of the Aurora Borealis zone
After breakfast, board your mini bus to travel to Tromsø, 6-hours north across the Norwegian border. Tromsø is the gateway to the Arctic and one of the best and most cosmopolitan places to observe the spectacle that is called the Northern Lights. Tromsø is located in the middle of the Aurora Borealis zone, and following the planet’s rotation, Tromsø moves into the aurora zone around 6pm to midnight.
Day 5 – Visit the Polar Museum and city walk
After breakfast, you are met by our guide at your hotel and brought outdoors on a historical and cultural city walk through Tromso city. During this walk you visit the Polar Museum with your guide. This museum contain the history of the Arctic explorers Amundsen, Nansen and Scott. The walk ends at the Polaria aquarium and environmental centre.
The rest of the day is free to wander this Arctic capital – if it is a bit fresh outside, explore the lovely cafes & galleries.
Day 6 – Fjord Cruise
Today, head out on a fjord cruise in a comfortable boat to one or more stunning Arctic fjords. The view of the city, the mountains and the fjords is spectacular.
You will have a knowledgable guide who will give you information about the safety rules on board as well as a presentation about the surroundings you see during the trip, local culture and geography. Dress warmly, bring your camera and enjoy the tour. There is a kiosk on board where you can buy food and cold drinks. Weather permitting.
Day 7 – Travel to Björkliden by express boat along Norwegian coast
In the mid morning you will make your way to the port and board the express service along the coast south to Harstad. On arrival in Harstad you will be picked up by our local friends for a 3-4 hour minibus transfer through winter landscapes to Björkliden in Sweden. Upon arrival check in at Björkliden Fjällby.
Dinner at the hotel’s restaurant.
Day 8 – Abisko Sky Station Evening visit
In the morning, join an exciting daytime Snowmobile Safari through the frozen wilderness and admire the snowy mountains.
After dinner, visit the Abisko Aurora Sky Station. Abisko, in the middle of the Aurora zone, is considered to be the best place on earth to see the Aurora Borealis. With its fresh, clean air and its practically permanent cloud-free sky the prerequisites in Abisko are optimal. More or less active northern lights can be seen almost every night, however, can never be guaranteed.
If you wish to enjoy dinner at the sky station, (not included in tour), we would recommend booking beforehand. We can do this for you if you would like.
Day 9 – Travel to ICEHOTEL & stay in an Ice room
Take the local train to Kiruna and transfer to ICEHOTEL. Wander around the ICEHOTEL – check out all the different art suites.
Enjoy a drink in the uber-cool icebar before settling into your snow room at the ICEHOTEL. Choose between two restaurants – the ICE Restaurant with an "Ice Menu" or the Old Homestead with a more traditional feel.
This evening you will overnight in an ice room. Sleep in thermal sleeping bags laid out on reindeer skins on a special bed made of snow and ice.
Inside ICEHOTEL, the temperature is never colder than -5 °C to -8 °C, regardless of how cold it may be outside. Dress in warm thermal underwear, put on a hat and slip into the cozy sleeping bag. You are awakened in the morning with a cup of hot lingonberry juice at your bedside. Breakfast buffet, morning sauna and towels are included in your stay.
Note: The ICEHOTEL loans you, free of charge, snow boots and for those who feel cold, onesie snow suits.
Day 10 – Ice sculpting & snowmobile excursion in search of Northern Lights
