Tromsø is the gateway to the Arctic and one of the best and most cosmopolitan places to observe the spectacle that is called the Northern Lights. Tromsø is located in the middle of the Aurora Borealis zone, and following the planet’s rotation, Tromsø moves into the aurora zone around 6 pm to midnight. Just east of Tromsø lies the Lyngen Alps where you will stay in a traditional timber lodge, Lyngen Lodge, beautifully situated on the fjord.

This is a perfect and tranquil place to observe the Northern Lights, combined with optional daytime activities such as dog sledding, snowmobiling, sea safaris skiing or snowshoeing.

One of our favourite and most popular lodges, Lyngen Lodge comes highly recommended by all 50 Degrees North travellers who have stayed here – availability is limited, so be quick!

For several other Northern Lights tours, read here.

Day 1 – Arrive in Tromsø and make your way to your hotel in the city centre

Arrive into Tromsø and make your own way to the hotel, a short drive from the airport. Tromsø is located 350 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle and even though it is the largest city in Northern Norway, it is intimate and charming. For the outdoor enthusiasts, Tromsø city centre is conveniently located just around the corner from seemingly untouched wilderness, which offers many opportunities for activities such as hiking, fishing, kayaking, dog sledding and whale safaris.

Day 2 – Visit the Polar Museum and city walk

In the afternoon you are met by our guide at your hotel and brought outdoors on a historical and cultural city walk through Tromsø city. During this walk you visit the Polar Museum with your guide. This museum contains the history of the Arctic explorers Amundsen, Nansen and Scott. The walk ends at the Polaria aquarium and environmental centre.

Days 3 – 5 – Lyngen Lodge – endless options for outdoor adventures, enjoying this luxurious lodge at night.

Lyngen Lodge sits in a natural forest clearing above a fjord with a striking mountain backdrop. High in the Arctic Circle, it’s as remote a spot as you could hope to find, in Europe at least. It is a place to enjoy nature, dog sledding, skiing and other snow activities. Or you can just laze around with breathtaking views across the fjord and the Alps. And, if you’re there from November to March, you can gasp at the northern lights.

Co-owner Graham Austick, who grew up in the north of England before defecting to St Anton to become a ski instructor and mountain guide, spotted the site when hiking through a nearby forest. He wanted to create a place which complemented rather than offended the nature around it, so he used a traditional Norwegian "lafting" pine timber frame with a thick grass roof, which also insulates the property. For the skiing enthusiasts, fast boats transport you direct to the snow, where you can ski down from spectacular summits to snow-covered beaches; potentially basking in the midnight sun if you’re there in May.

Activities on offer:

  • Dog sledding – 5 hours through the wildeness with a campfire lunch
  • Sea safari by boat – deep sea fishing and eagle spotting
  • Snow shoeing – Northern lights
  • Skiing
  • Snow mobiling – ice fishing, snowshoeing and mountain views

Today, you will be picked up mid-afternoon for a three hour transfer to Lyngen Lodge. On arrival, you will enjoy dinner at 7.30pm followed by a Northern Lights presentation and photography tips. Each day’s activities commence at 10am.

Day 6 – Lyngen Lodge, transfer back to Tromsø

After breakfast, transfer return to Tromsø. With the afternoon free, look out for cultural things of interest to do. Tromsø hosts the Tromsø International Film Festival and the Northern Light Festival, both of which attract visitors from all over the world. At the Northern Norway Art Museum, you can explore art and crafts with ties to Northern Norway from the 1800s up until today.

The city is also known for its lively night scene and a range of restaurants specialising in the fresh ingredients of the Arctic. Extra Northern Lights activities can be arranged for this evening, or you could enjoy a spa and wellness package on Vulkana, a traditional Norwegian fishing boat transformed to a first class vessel for wellness and exploration.

Day 7 – Depart Tromsø

Enjoy a free morning in Tromsø to explore the rest of the city. Recommended is a tour on the cable car that takes you up above the city with spectacular views of the islands, Alps and fjord beyond the city.
