Available: 2019-07-04 to 2019-09-13 starting from $4012 AUD
Join our new tour visiting the Western Fjords of Norway, starting from Bergen and finishing in Ålesund. Discover Western Norway’s mountains on guided hikes and admire the breathtaking panoramic views across the scenic landscape. Think Pulpit Rock without the summer crowds…
Although overshadowed by the sublime fjords, the coastline visited during this trip is none the less extraordinary. Follow along this coastline from Bergen to Kalvåg on an express ferry with the locals. Meet your private 50 Degrees North minivan as you come off the local ferry and enjoy three days of travel through a very remote and enchanting area of Norway. Stop along the way for guided hiking and cultural visits, such as small, local folk museums.
Day 1 – Arrive Bergen and explore the old Hanseatic city
Bergen offers many attractions and sights, many of them within walking distance. Recommended sights of interests are the Hanseatic harbour Bryggen, Troldhaugen, the Fish market, Bergen Aquarium and Gamle Bergen (Old Bergen Open Air Museum).
Be sure to visit the Fish Market for lunch or dinner.
Day 2 – Hike Bergen City Mountains
Bergen is famous for its beautiful nature, which is easily accessible from the city center as the city is surrounded by no fewer than 7 mountains. The most famous of the 7 mountains are Fløyen (320 meters) and Ulriken (643 meters).
Today, you will join a day trip to the two most famous peaks in Bergen, Mount Ulriken and Mount Fløyen. This is an excellent way to experience Norwegian nature like the locals.
A classic Bergen hike is the hike from Ulriken to Fløyen, called the "Vidden" hike. This is an approximately 6 hour guided hike (including breaks), which offers both panoramic views over the city, surrounding fjords and islands and on clear days we see both the Golden Mountain (Gullfjellet) and the Folgefonna glacier.
Day 3 – Express Boat from Bergen to Smørhamn
Today you will travel to Smørhamn with express boat from Bergen. Check in to your hotel in Kalvåg on Frøya Island. Kalvåg is small coastal fishing village with old warfside sheds and boathouses.
Day 4 – Guided hike on Europe’s highest sea cliff
Today you will hike on the Europe’s highest sea cliff. Hornelen Mountain rises up to 860 meters from sea level and from the top you’ll get unspoilt scenery.
The hike will give you a spectacular hiking experience. The trail is quite challenging and steep, but gives you fantastic views all along the way to the top. On the top you can enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view. You will get a great overview of the varied and scenic landscape in with narrow deep fjords, majestic mountains and small islands far out at sea. If you dare to, you can lie down on the edge of the cliff and look straight down on the sea 860 meters below you. Hiking to Hornelen is a full day trip, but it is worth the effort you put in. The view is spectacular!
NOTE: A general good physical fitness is necessary to hike Hornelen. The trail is steep and challenging and this hike is suitable for experienced hikers.
In the evening, return back to Kalvåg.
Day 5 – Bus from Kalvåg via Loen to Ålesund
This morning, meet your minivan and driver. Make yourself comfortable in this private van that will take you through the fjords for the next 2 days. Follow along the magnificent Nordfjord today. Along the way to Loen, you will stop at the Nordfjord Folk Museum with entrance and a guide included. Explore the old historic buildings of Nordfjordeid with a collection of 44 old houses of historical interest. Many of the houses are furnished and show different periods of time, mostly from the 18th and 19th centuries. There is also a cultural-history collection in the main building.
Arrive at Loen in the middle of the afternoon and check in at Hotel Alexandra. Loen has a lovely little wooden church to visit late in the afternoon, or you can relax by the pool and day spa. This evening, dinner at the hotel is included.
Day 6 – Guided Hike up to Mt. Hoven via Ferrata
After breakfast, its time for an exciting guided challenge. Via Ferrata Loen starts at Hotel Alexandra and takes you up to Mt. Hoven (1011 m.). Fantastic views of beautiful mountains, glaciers and fjord. Duration 6-7 hours. The new suspension bridge across a 160 meter deep canyon is 120 meters long, and is the longest via ferrata bridge in Europe. The bridge opened in August 2013. The walk across will definitely give you butterflies. The bridge is located at 750 m.a.s.l. To get there you have to climb the Via Ferrata Loen. You may also return to Loen by cablecar.
NOTE: This is a challenging hike and you need to be an experienced hiker and in good physical shape to do this hike.
Day 7 – Loen to Ålesund by minivan with a lunch at the historic Hotel Union Øye, then a local ferry across the fjords
Today you will travel from Loen via Hjørundfjord to Ålesund – your final leg of the journey by minivan. First stop today is the small town of Stryn. The driver stops along the way on request as you spend the day travelling through this beautiful section of road. Lunch is scheduled for the Hotel Union Øye (optional). This multistorey, old-world hotel dating from 1891 is a 4-minute walk from the Hjørundfjorden waterfront and has a lovely balcony and garden to enjoy.
Then it is time to catch the ferry across from Leknes to Standal as you make your way to Ålesund. Say goodbye to your driver on arrival into Ålesund.
Day 8 – Wildlife Safari on RIB-boat
Today you will get close to nature when you join an exciting Wildlife Sea Safari. The safari goes along the coastline outside Ålesund in a high-speed RIB-boat.
