Dolls Festival or Girls' Day, traces its origins to an ancient Japanese custom in which straw china dolls were set afloat on a boat and travelled down a river to the sea, supposedly taking bad spirits with them. Today, families display dolls on a seven tiered platform covered in red carpet and often visit shrines to pray for the health and happiness of their girls.
