The festival is an annual religious event. Hindu mythology recognises the origin of the Magh Mela to be the beginning of the Universe. Hundreds of thousands of Hindu devotees take a holy swim particularly in the Sangam, where the Ganges, Yamuna and Saraswati rivers converge.
