Chichen Itza city was the most important capital city built by the Maya people in the Classic period. It became the most visited centre of cult and pilgrimage, the Cenote of Sacrifices and still are sacred centres for the Maya. Now visited each year by more than a million people, the prominent El Castillo pyramid looking structure has become an emblem of the Maya culture all over the world. During the spring and fall equinoxes, the great pyramid is a visual symbol of the day and night as the sun of the late afternoon creates the illusion of a snake creeping slowly down the northern staircase.
