Port Douglas is the gateway to the World Heritage wonders of Tropical North Queensland, the closes mainland port to the Great Barrier Reef and only a short drive into the heart of the Wet Tropics rainforest at Daintree and Cape Tribulation. An hour’s drive from Cairns it is one of Australia’s most scenic coastal roads with the rainforest on one side and the Great Barrier Reef on the other. This intimate and relaxed town, where food, wine, arts and culture are appreciated, the slow pace will revitalise you with lazy days on the beach or come alive and explore nature’s tropical wonders.
Firstly everyone should go to Port Douglas! My advice is go in late April and/or early May just before the peak tourist season, you may risk a few rainy days, but you will not need to book a restaurant for dinner and you will feel like you have the whole town to yourself. Also when visiting the reef from Port Douglas I would recommend you take a smaller catamaran to Low Isle rather than the large 250 passenger commercial boats, it just makes the experience more authentic.
