Overview

Join us for our special small group tour of Lapland, a magical place of pristine Arctic landscapes and snow-dusted woodlands. In this winter wonderland, the cold air is cut only by the sound of rushing rivers and panting huskies as they prepare to rush across this impossibly vast, white wilderness. Witness a beautiful part of the world where Christmas feels always close and learn how people in the North cope with extreme temperatures. This tour includes a evening at the ICEHOTEL and three nights in a glass igloo.

The trip runs from Kittilä, Finland with 4 departures. With a maximum of only 12 fellow passengers, spend less time waiting and more time enjoying! Getting on and off the bus, hotel check-ins, comfort stops, meals – with a small group everything is easier and quicker, giving you more time to enjoy your holiday.

Day 1 – Welcome to Lapland and transfer to your glass igloo accommodation

Arrive into the small airport of Kittilä and transfer to your accommodation, check in from 4pm. This evening you will meet your tour leader and group.

Each glass igloo has a kitchenette, shower and toilet. The windows are insulated and electrically heated to keep them from frosting. The kitchenette is equipped with a breakfast set for two, electric stove, microwave, coffee maker and kettle, toaster and fridge. In addition, the igloos have a radio/CD player, a hair dryer and a socket for car engine heaters.

At the centre of the igloo is a motorised double bed that can be converted into twin beds.

This evening, enjoy a group dinner at the accommodation restaurant, Restaurant Aurora Sky – open from 6pm.

Day 2 – Experience the rush of a real dog-sled

After breakfast, start your arctic experience with huskies! After the safety instructions and winter clothing being handed out, start your 8km safari and enjoy the silence and beautiful winter scenery of Levi. Everyone will get a chance to mush their own husky team (one driving, one is sitting on a sledge). After the trip warm drinks will be served by the open fire. Includes: Transfer, hot beverages, 8 km safari, professional guide.

Afterwards, why not spend the afternoon in Levi where you can enjoy the local restaurants and cafes or join more optional activities. Downhill Skiing is also an afternoon option!

Day 3 – Snowmobiling to a forest lake with ice fishing and lunch.

Today you will drive by snowmobiles to a snow white forest lake full of fish. Try to catch your meal, a rainbow-trout, by ice fishing! In case you are not lucky, the host of the lake has promised to cook delicious soup by the fire of his wooden hut. After the lunch the snowmobile safari continues round the fells to the summit of Levi and back to the centre. Duration 4-5 hours.

Return to your glass igloo.

Day 4 – Travel to Kilpisjärvi and stay at boutique hotel Cahkal

After breakfast, board your bus to travel to Kilpisjärvi. The place is located just over 3 hours north towards the Norwegian border, the very northwesternmost point of Finland, near the Arctic Ocean. Here you will stay at boutique hotel Cahkal for the next 3 nights.

After check-in, enjoy a 3-course lunch and relax with the mountain views from your stylish room.

This evening, enjoy a group dinner at the accommodation restaurant, Aika.

Day 5 – Visit a local reindeer farm and enjoy a Northern Lights tour

After breakfast, visit a local reindeer farm which is located nearby. A short walk to the farm where you meet the local reindeer herder who tell a bit about reindeer herding, a traditional local livelihood. You will also get to feed the reindeers and take photos before finishing with a short reindeer ride together with the herder. Head back to the hotel for a 3-course lunch and enjoy some free time in the afternoon.

After dinner, head into the surrounding nature for a late evening adventure to seek for the northern lights. At a nice spot we enjoy hot local berry juice and snacks and enjoy the silence around us. If we are lucky the experience will be fullfilled by the dancing northern lights and stars in the sky.

Day 6 – Snowshoe adventure and sauna experience in the evening

After breakfast you will go on a snowshow adventure. It is an easy way to get in to the beautiful surrounding snowy landscape.

With local guides you will get most knowledge about the unique surrounding nature and it’s rich history. During the trip we build a small shelter in the snow together and enjoy delicious light lunch and admire the views.

After dinner, it is time to experience the famous Finnish sauna. The large window of the steam room lets you admire the astonishing Saana mountain. Cool off on the terrace and enjoy the view while listening to the calming sound of the Cahkal River.

Day 7 – Travel to Tromsø – the middle of the Aurora Borealis zone and Northern Lights Dinner Cruise

After breakfast, board your bus to travel to Tromsø, 2.5 hours north across the Norwegian border. Tromsø is the gateway to the Arctic and one of the best and most cosmopolitan places to observe the spectacle that is called the Northern Lights. Tromsø is located in the middle of the Aurora Borealis zone, and following the planet’s rotation, Tromsø moves into the aurora zone from 6pm to midnight.

In the evening, sail in complete silence around the Arctic capital and enjoy the city from the sea. Take in the atmospheric arctic night over a local and seasonal tasting menu. On board the electric catamaran enjoy dinner prepared by a local restaurant with locally-sourced, seasonal and fresh ingredients. The dinner is inspired by traditional Northern Norwegian culinary dishes. Buy your drinks from the bar and enjoy the panoramic view of the well-known sights around Tromsø. You will sail past the famous Arctic cathedral, under the bridges of Tromsø and enjoy the view of the city. Sailing away from the light pollution of the city you might see the Northern Lights from deck, or from the panoramic saloon on the second floor.

Day 8 – Guided walk in Tromsø with polar museum and free evening

After breakfast, you are met by our guide at your hotel and brought outdoors on a historical and cultural city walk through Tromsø city. During this walk you visit the Polar Museum with your guide. This museum contains the history of the Arctic explorers Amundsen, Nansen and Scott. The walk ends at the Polaria aquarium and environmental centre.

The rest of the day is free to wander around in this Arctic capital – if it is a bit fresh outside, explore the lovely cafes & galleries.

Day 9 – Travel to Kiruna and then check into the famous ICEHOTEL

In the mid-morning you will make your way to the port and board the express service along the coast south to Harstad. On arrival in Harstad you will be picked up by our local friends for a minibus transfer through winter landscapes to Kiruna in Sweden and check-in to ICEHOTEL.

Enjoy a drink in the uber-cool icebar before settling into your snow room at the ICEHOTEL.

This evening, you will settle into your ice room for the night. Sleep in thermal sleeping bags laid out on reindeer skins on a special bed made of snow and ice.

Inside ICEHOTEL, the temperature is never colder than -5 °C to -8 °C, regardless of how cold it may be outside. Dress in warm thermal underwear, put on a hat and slip into the cozy sleeping bag. You are awakened in the morning with a cup of hot lingonberry juice at your bedside. Breakfast buffet, morning sauna and towels are included in your stay.

Note: The ICEHOTEL loans you snow boots and for those who feel cold, onesie snow suits – both free of charge.

Day 10 – Ice sculpting and farewell dinner

Today, you will try ice sculpting, led by local artists who will guide you into this magical world of art and design. The class starts with the instructor talking about the crystalclear ice, which is harvested from Torne River. After that, you get an introduction on how to use the tools, your own ice block and can let the creativity flow and ice take shape.

This evening you will stay in a warm room, i.e. a normal hotel room and enjoy a good long sleep. A farewell dinner with the group will take place in the restaurant.
